Reef Life

Coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean floor, yet nearly a quarter of all known marine species live there. Every square foot is contested, and each resident has found its own strategy: schools of snappers and jacks rely on numbers, the moray eel lies in wait in its crevice, and the mandarinfish waits for dusk to leave the coral and show off. Nothing about the colors is random: they help animals recognize each other, attract a mate, send a warning or blend into the background. Stripes, eyespots, gradients… nature shows an imagination no fashion designer could ever match. From the Red Sea to the Pacific, these images pay tribute to ecosystems as abundant as they are fragile.
